Somatheeram Ayurvedic Health Resort, Kerala

We believe that the wisdom of 'Ayurveda' is one of the greatest contributions of the Indian culture to the world.

In the late 1980's, when Somatheeram was started, no other Ayurvedic Resort existed in India, and Ayurveda was almost unknown outside of India, its country of origin.

Mr. P. Mathew, an Indian national based in Germany, thought then about introducing this ancient Indian science to Europe. Inspired by this thought, the idea of Somatheeram was born: This was the moment when the idea of Somatheeram was born: Somatheeram, an authentic Ayurvedic resort which reflects the culture & beauty of India in every aspect.

Somatheeram's holistic concept is to offer Ayurveda, Yoga and Meditation on a highly competent level in a relaxing and enchanting atmosphere. The complete resort is embedded in a beautiful tropical garden and its bungalows are built according to the traditional architecture of Kerala. Most of the bungalows offer a marvellous view of the ocean. For our quality of service, we have been awarded several times as 'The Best Ayurvedic Centre' by the Government of Kerala. Somatheeram Health Group is the only resort in India which has received this prestigious award repeatedly. Ayurveda & Health
Ayurveda is a philosophy that deals with the preservation of a healthy life style and is the oldest known medical system. Its origin lies in India and dates back 5000 years. The first written documentations which have been found are 3000 years old and written on palm leaves.

The word Ayurveda derives from the very old and traditional Indian language "Sanskrit"." Ayus" means life or life span, "Veda" means wisdom, knowledge, science. Most commonly Ayurveda is translated as Science of Life.
Nowadays Ayurveda is often reduced to a medical system which deals with the prevention and healing of diseases. But it is rather a philosophy, which teaches how to lead a healthy life in which the body, mind & soul are balanced.

The basic theory of this philosophy is the Tri-Dosha-Concept
In Ayurveda the five elements of nature, air, ether, fire, water and earth, combine in pairs to form three dynamic forces called Doshas. These are Vatha, Pitha and Kapha.

The harmony and the balance of the Doshas in the body is the primary condition of the health. Wrong behaviour and food habits disturb the harmony and lead to diseases. The basic principales of treatment in Ayurveda is to eliminate the internal diseases to bring back the normal functioning state of the body
